In our first quarter we worked on place value for whole numbers and decimals. Students learned how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers with and without decimals!!! In 5th grade students are working with whole numbers up to a million and decimals through to the thousandth's place! Students must be able to read, write, and represent these numbers with words, base ten block pictures and expanded form.
In this second quarter students are currently working with FRACTIONS. Students must master working on finding equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions with unlike denominators! In fifth grade we are working with halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, ninths, tenths, twelfths, hundredths, and thousandths.
Homework - Students should be coming home Monday through Thursday with math homework! Please take time to review this work with your child. Students are expected to show their work using strategies learned in class. Your child should have examples of our daily math strategy in his or her math journal!!
Multiplication Facts - Please assess your child to see if they have mastered their multiplication facts through 12 fluently. This is so important and will help your child problem solve much more efficiently. This was a standard that should have been mastered by the end of 3rd grade.
